UAV Development: A Concept for Modern Drone and Aerial Robot Systems
What is a UAV system?
A UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) system refers to an unmanned aircraft including flight control, sensor technology, communication, and mission logic. UAVs, also known as drones, are currently used in civil applications such as agricultural technology, inspection, surveying, logistics, and research, as well as in safety-critical applications.
Developing UAV Systems: An Interdisciplinary Challenge
A UAV is a highly integrated system of mechanics, power supply, sensor fusion, embedded electronics, software, mission logic, and physics-based control.
In the early development phases of UAV systems, it is therefore not only the selection of individual components that is crucial, but rather the interplay of a resilient system architecture, realistic simulation, and fast prototyping. Flight behavior, actuators, sensor noise, wind, environmental influences, mission phases, and safety logic must be considered together early on so that a robust, testable, and later production-ready system can emerge from a technical idea.
UAV Simulation and Virtual Flight Testing as a Development Foundation
When developing autonomous flight functions, practical tests are essential. However, real flight tests are usually expensive, often risky, or frequently scheduled simply too early. With the help of simulations, however, flight phases, control strategies, sensor errors, wind fields, mission profiles, and edge cases can be systematically investigated with lower costs and risks. To achieve this, simulation combines aerodynamics, propulsion systems, sensors, environmental models, and control logic into a digital testing space.
For such cases, CarByte supports the development of detailed, physics-based system models that incorporate flow dynamics data, propulsion characteristic curves, mass properties, and sensor characteristics. On this basis, flight controls can be designed, mission logics tested, and robust autopilot functions iteratively improved. This approach becomes particularly powerful when real flight control hardware is coupled directly with the simulation: in Hardware-in-the-Loop tests, the real electronics run in the control loop, while the aircraft and its environment are mapped virtually.
Developing UAV Prototypes - From Concept to Airworthy Hardware

The development of UAV and drone systems begins with a functional idea, for example, when a special mission profile, a specific use case such as in agricultural technology, a particular payload, or new technologies are to be tested. This first leads to a technical target vision. Key questions are now:
What sensors are required?
What computing power is required?
What does the power supply look like?
Which control and safety functions must already function demonstrably in the prototype?
A working prototype is an optimal foundation for the finished product. As an engineering partner, CarByte consciously sees itself as a prototype builder that does not just stop at concept papers. We develop hardware, design printed circuit boards, integrate electrical and electronic components, and thus build real, testable prototypes. In doing so, we combine commercial off-the-shelf components with custom PCB solutions, paying attention to geometric boundary conditions, robust interfaces, reliable power distribution, and a subsequent transition to a production-ready solution.
We take care of:
Development of modular hardware and electronic architectures for UAV and drone systems
PCB design, concept, and construction of electrical and electronic systems as well as integration of airworthy UAV prototypes
Integration of GPS, IMU, magnetometer, barometer, and other sensors
Development and simulation of flight control, mission logic, environmental conditions, and flight dynamics
Hardware-in-the-loop validation with real flight control hardware and physics-based simulation models
UAV Development with Simulation, Hardware, and Prototyping from a Single Source
For CarByte, UAV development is an ideal example of our holistic end-to-end philosophy: we consider requirements, physics, simulation, electronics, software, prototyping, and product transition together. In pilot projects, we place a special focus on flight control, mission logic, basic flight physics, and the use of CFD data in order to build realistic simulation models and make sound technical decisions early on.
It is precisely this connection of model, hardware, and real prototype that makes the difference. Simulation reduces risks, hardware tests build confidence, and short iteration cycles visibly bring development progress to the table.
